- I was stunned by the decision of the U.S. appeals court in
- California that a writer may deliberately misquote someone as
- long as the sense is not substantially changed (PRESS, Aug. 21).
- To the extent that it makes allowances for the normal failings
- of people who are trying to do an accurate job of reporting,
- perhaps the ruling has value. But if it encourages the idea that
- deliberate misquotation is acceptable, then it should be decried
- by journalists of integrity everywhere.
